The BOLBOCERATIDAE Family

This page was draw up by Stefano Ziani.

The rank of family was recently proposed by Scholtz and Brown (1996) for this group, including the subfamilies Bolboceratinae and Athyreinae. However, not all authors have accepted this taxonomic proposal. The Bolboceratidae are a worldwide family, with food habits probably correlated with the mycetophagy. Adults dig deep vertical burrows.

In the Palearctic region six tribes of Bolboceratinae are recorded, with 13 genera and about 50 species. Three tribes with one genus each and 5 species are recorded from the Levant. One of them, Bolboceras berytense Petrovitz, 1963, is a Lebanese endemism.
