The family Geotrupidae is distributed in Holarctic region with coprophagous, saprophagous and (subfamily Lethrinae only) phytophagous species (10.0 to 45.0 mm long). Adults digs deep burrows, till 300 cm in depth. Outside they can be collected at light.

In Palearctic region geotrupids include 2 subfamilies: Geotrupinae with 2 tribes and more than 10 genera, and Lethrinae with only one genus. Only the subfamily Geotrupinae is distributed in the Levant, with 3 genera and 4 species, no one of them endemics.
